World Bank says more Ugandans have embraced agriculture due to covid-19

According to World Bank Country Manager, Mr. Tony Thompson, Covid-19 has driven more Ugandans towards Covid-19.

Mr. Tony Thompson made these remarks during the virtual release of the 17th World Bank update on Uganda’s economy.

He attributed this to the rates of job loss, closure of small business which all happened due to challenges that arose from the pandemic in one way or the other driving Ugandans towards agriculture.

“Following job losses and closure of small businesses, many people [have] returned to agriculture and other natural resources dependent activities to manage and survive the crisis,” he noted.

Due to this, natural resources in turn suffered high pressures from the scramble to utilize the limited resources as a mechanism of survival during the crisis that arose from the lengthy Covid-19 lockdown.

“This has further strained natural resources, which were already under pressure from rapid population growth, urbanisation, refugee influx and the country’s drive for industrialisation,” he went on to say additionally.

Additionally, he noted that Uganda’s forest have suffered the greatest impact as over the last six years, forests have been declining at a 2.6% rate every year implying Uganda is one of the global leaders in forest loss.

With such a high rate of forest destruction, climate change risks are at a high rate for a country like Uganda and this may result into extreme weather exacerbated resulting from capital degradation.

Due to this, World Bank through her “From crisis to green resilience growth: investigating in sustainable land management and climate-smart agriculture” report said that the government has to adopt sustainable land management so as to attain inclusive economic and social growth.
